Practical Romance Suggestions

Today, I’m going to offer several bits of practical love advice for couples. I often write about what to do in a relationship crisis, but I don’t write enough about romance maintenance to keep your relationship from reaching that crisis point. Following the suggestions below and you’ll be able to avoid many of the mistakes couples make.

Do the Little Things

Being in a romance doesn’t have to be all about ostentatious displays and grand, sweeping gestures. In fact, most of the outward signs of your love should be everyday, subtle gestures. Showing your love is as important as saying “I love you”, though that’s important, too. Though actions do speak louder than words, a good romance has plenty of active displays of affection along with the kind words, compliments, and sweet nothings.

Do things around the house to make his or her life easier. Take up for your loved one instead of criticizing them in front of other people. Jot a note that says “Missing You” or “I Love You” when you leave the house every once in a while (but not enough they take it for granted).

A hundred small actions like this mean a lot more than if you’re a jerk to your spouse or lover most of the time, then descend in a hot air balloon showering flowers out of the sky for her and asking for forgiveness. Big moments like these make great scenes in a movie, but aren’t what you build a healthy and sharing relationship on.

Spend Time Alone

Married couples often get into the habit of taking the kids with them everywhere, but it’s better to sometimes leave the children with a grandparent or a babysitter and have an old-fashioned date. Single couples sometimes get in the habit of double-dating, attending group events, or going out dancing. But it’s good to spend time alone, away from everyone else.

That’s when you bond the most. That’s when you have those romantic moments. Most important, that’s when your relationship seems the most like it was in those early, magical moments. Couples who’ve been together a while need to occasionally recapture the magic. Do it somewhere alone together.

Share Life Together

Have shared moments, mutual memories, and common things between you. That sounds elemental, but couples who drift apart often forget the most basic love tips. The two of you are together, so you should remember what “together” means. Have shared jokes and inside jokes that only the two of you know about. Have pet names and nicknames. These things reinforce the “two of you” instead of just the “you”.

Remember to build memories of the good times, because these are touchstones of a good relationship. When you have the bad times–and they’ll happen–a couple needs those good reflections to balance out the bad. These are memories of why you’re together after all this time.

Take a camera with you everywhere you go. Take pictures of the good moments, but without being so obsessive about photography that it becomes a negative to him or her. Keep taking pictures and build scrapbooks and portfolios of these moments. Occasionally, get these out and share them. Put them on your computer and forward an email with one or two of them to each other occasionally. These are subtle reminders you have a shared past–that you’re pot-committed to the relationship.

Touchy, Feely, Kissy

Remember to stay affectionate with each other. Showing affection builds affection. When the two of you get out of the habit of kissing and hugging one another, something dies in the relationship. People need the positive affirmation of an embrace or a peck on the cheek every once in a while. Give your partner some loving.

Seriously, sociologists have performed studies which show that couples who stay together tend to kiss each other when they leave for work in the morning, and they tend to say “I love you” when they leave the house in the morning. You have a reminder all day that someone loves you, but it also builds affection. Remember, people are like planets; you’re in constant motion. The two of you are either drifting apart or coming closer together. Drift enough and you’ll stop exerting attraction on each other.

Have Fun Together

Find ways to enjoy each other’s company. If you feel the two of you don’t have anything in common, take up a new hobby together. You might wonder what hobby that would be, but there’s a simple way to decide. Sit down like a rational couple with a list of things each of you always wished you could do, probably in order of preference. When you get to a subject on the list that both of you listed, there’s your new pastime. Keep doing that until it’s no longer fun, then find something else.

The point being, you should enjoy being together. Life in a relationship can get stale if you let it. When it does, shake things up. You’ll find even the smallest changes become big when you’ve had monotony in your life. When you’ve eaten a dish without any salt all your life, you’d be amazed what a pinch of salt does to change the taste. Add a bit of spice to the romance and see what that does for you. If it doesn’t do the trick, add a little more. You’ll eventually get it right.

Have a Financial Plan

One last practical suggestion for love is to find a way to take care of the budget. Too many good marriages and relationships have ended due to the stresses caused by financial crisis. Money matters and disputes over debt and spending remain one of the biggest reasons for splits, separations, and divorces. Talk all you want about love, but if the two of you continually remain in financial trouble, it’s human to start pointing fingers eventually.

Most romantic couples will never be financially independent or have no economic stresses, but that’s a far cry from being in chronic debt or hovering on the verge of bankruptcy. Take care of your finances and that’s one huge potential pitfall of a marriage or relationship. If the two of you don’t have to worry about money, you’ll have more time to focus on the positive side of things.

If the two of you are having debt problems, sit down and come up with a plan. Having a plan is always better than worrying and wondering about the spiraling debt. Those who don’t simply aren’t communicating. Once you have a plan, stick with it. Otherwise, you’re breaking promises and creating more stress.

Love Tips

Maintain affection and respect and keep the finances in order and you’re relationship is usually going to be pretty healthy. All you’ll have to worry about then is the kids, the in-laws, and the sex life. But those are subjects for another day. Have a good love life.

Love Advice

When you’re looking for relationship help, you’ll often take advice from the strangest sources.

Type in “relationship advice” on your computer and you’ll see adds for Dr. Phil’s programs, relationship e-books, and love psychics.

While I could argue whether Dr. Phil or the love psychic will give better advice, I bet you could find better counselors than either.

And while the romance ebook out there probably exists that helps, I suggest you avoid anything that offers a sales pitch, such as “ALL CAPITAL LETTERS” and excessive use of terms like “#1″, “the best”, “special offer”, or the color yellow on their homepage.

Solving Relationship Problems

It’s better to listen to sound, reasonable advice which isn’t trying to sell you their latest self-help book or astrological package. You have a number of resources you can draw on, both in your circle of friends, in your community, and even in your own home. Go online to read additional advice if you need to. Buy a textbook on relationship counseling, if you need to. But exhaust the following resources before you get too exotic in your search.

Stop Arguing, You Two

Maybe the two of you don’t have the time or money for trained counseling right now. If so, set up a few ground rules in your relationship. Agree to start respecting each other more often and agree to stop arguing (at least for a length of time). Sign a truce and give one another a little peace. When you start lowering the stress level and raising the respect levels, amazing things can happen.

If calling an end to arguments sounds unrealistic in your case, then stop arguing in front of other people, especially your kids. Don’t undermine each other’s authority. In front of adults, don’t undermine each other’s self-respect. In fact, don’t say anything negative about your love partner. Act like you’re a professional sports team and everyone else in life is the media. Keep everything “in-house”. This doesn’t mean issues don’t get resolved–they just don’t get aired to the public.

This is a stop-gap measure that may only get at one of the symptoms of the problem, but once you stop disrespecting each other and start respecting each other’s moods and feelings, you’ll feel the stress levels reduce. Maybe then you can start to talk like rational adults and start resolving some of the real issues.

Get Advice from a Friend

Find a friend or family member whom you love, respect, and trust. Ask this person for real advice about your relationship, giving them enough details to reach an informed opinion.

When I say “real advice”, I mean just that. I’m not talking about you venting, where you tell your friends and advisor your problems in the hopes of getting sympathy. When I say “enough details”, I mean giving information, then shutting up and not getting defensive when they start to talk. The idea is for you to listen, not to talk. Remember, one half of good communication is listening to the other person.

One additional word of advice when talking to friends and family about this: if you have someone you vent to, this is probably not the person to get relationship advice from. Whenever you get frustrated and complain about your romantic partner, they are only hearing one side of the story. You go to them for sympathy and emotional support, not real advice. They have essentially learned about the worst side of your relationship and, specifically, your girlfriend or boyfriend. You’ve filled them with relationship propoganda. So when you ask them about their opinions about your relationship, they have a distorted view and are almost certain to tell you to get out. In that situation, you would and I would.

Instead, find a friend whom you love and respect and know doesn’t have a close emotional investment in the relationship, then give them enough information (not propoganda) to inform them where your relationship stands. It helps if they have seen the two of you together, but don’t have a deep personal relationship with the other person in the relationship, because they may have observations that can help. It also helps if they have more experience in relationships than you do.

Talk to a Relationship Counselor

I’ve given this advice before and I’ll give it again. If the two of you have decided that you love one another, but it’s not working out (but both want it to), talk to a trained relationship counselor to get assistance in saving your relationship. Most communities have relationship advisors who give free or inexpensive relationship support.

The relationship counselor has taken psychology and sociology courses and has been trained in techniques proven to work. They can act as mediator to whatever issues the two of you have and mediator in disputes the two of you are having. Most importantly, romance counselors can teach you methods so the two of you can work on improving your communication skills, your empathy for one another, and your problem resolution methods. Going to an advice counselor is getting instruction in how to be in a healthy relationship.

When I say “healthy relationship”, that’s what I mean. Certain relationships are never going to get better.

Abusive Relationships

If you’re in an abusive relationship, get out immediately. The abusive partner isn’t almost certain to go on abusing you and here’s why: they have severe feelings of inadequacy, jealousy, or anger that makes it difficult, if not impossible, not to be abusive. The person has psychological issues that manifest as violence. Because the abusive partner has deep-seated feelings of inferiority, they can’t be in a healthy relationship.

You might think the man who bullies you intellectually and plays games with you emotionally couldn’t possibly have low self-esteem, but it’s true in most case. (You’ll find exceptions, but those people are probably sociopaths who don’t feel emotions the way you and I do.) He is so afraid you’ll leave him that he tries to systematically destroy your pride and self-esteem, hoping you’ll stay with him. Whether it’s emotional or physical abuse, he’s trying to control you through fear, intimidation, and negative reinforcement. Break out of the cycle.

If you’re in an abusive romance, you need to know that you deserve better. You’re a thinking, feeling human being and you deserve respect, love, and nurturing. If you don’t have respect in a relationship, all the love on your part won’t make it work. Get out and find a love partner who won’t terrorize you. They exist and you can find them.

Astrology and Romance

Love horoscopes are everywhere online.

You’ll find plenty of love psychics, astrological counselors, and even the inimitable California Astrology Association.

Many newspapers and online publications that offer updates, opinions, news, and advice also have their own small daily zodiac reference. So you can find plenty of reading online where the astrological calendar and your love life intersect.

You’ll find “daily horoscopes”, “weekly horoscopes”, and “yearly horoscopes”. You’ll find western astrology readings, Chinese horoscopes, and reading based on Vedic or even Hindu zodiac signs. You can Google “love astrology”, “sex astrology”, and compatability readings. You can consult Tarot, Feng Shui, numerology, and I Ching perspectives. You can talk with “true psychics”. Heck, you can test to see whether you’re psychic yourself.

Free Love Horoscopes

Most of the time, you’ll even be able to find these for free. Browsing through these are a way to feel that some power is on your side. Search long enough and you’ll be able to find just the right horoscope for your situation. You won’t too much harmful in these magical love readings, besides the time lost when you could be spending with your family, reading a book, or getting some rest and relaxation.

Love Horoscopes for Money

Then there are the paid horoscopes, with detailed readings that break down your love life and romance prospects. Interact with an online romance psychic and these people can tell you specific information, for the right price. Again, if you invoke the powers of the aforementioned CAA (California Astrology Association), they’ll sell you love spells to help your prospects or hurt the prospects of your rivals, and they won’t even charge you much for the magic. Most love spells cost $29.95, or $35.95 for them to cast the spell a second time 10 minutes later–thus doubling its power. That’s right.

Which brings me to my reason for discussing love horoscopes at all. Some would want to warn you off of using black magic or gray magic or whatever color magic a love spell would be considered. They might suggest you need spiritual guidance for even considering such things, or even consulting the daily horoscope at all. Then there’s another kind of warning about spending your time and money on love readings.

Why Read a Love Horoscope?

Before we continue, if you use romance horoscopes to gain confidence to approach women, read no further. Maybe you don’t have that natural store of confidence and masculine aggression to walk across the room and meet women, so an astrological reading that says this is your lucky night helps you get over that hesitation. Positive reinforcement in whatever form can be a powerful thing.

If you take a look at a daily astrology love reading as a pick-me-up in the morning or to get some sense of order in your life, don’t worry too much about whether your love psychic has insight into the workings of fate. Just go with it and read no further. My point isn’t to be a buzz-kill.

But if you want a serious discussion of love horoscopes and whether they have a lot of use in your love life, read on. Consider this the skeptics portion of this blog post.

Do Love Horoscopes Really Work?

You have to ask yourself whether planetary motions somehow affect the destiny patterns in your life. Actually, you have to ask yourself whether “destiny patterns”, or whatever else you want to call them, exist at all. That’s pretty heady stuff, but I wanted to discuss this question seriously for a moment.

You might ask yourself: why would the stars and planets affect your love life?

In the old days, people believed the Earth was the center of the universe. They believed everything in the sky revolved around the Earth. That was a natural enough assumption, one that common sense would tell you was happening. When we’re walking on the surface of the Earth, we don’t feel like we’re spinning at thousands of miles an hour or rotating around the Earth at astronomical speeds. We seem to be still, and everything in the night sky seems to be darting around us.

Before people understood about planetary motions and the fact the Earth was just off in some nook of the cosmos, it seems like the planets and the stars and the comets had been placed there for some purpose. Since the most observant humans of the time realized that, not only the planets, but the stars had patterns to their movements, it was natural to assume this pattern was god-sent and an indication that fate was at work on some level. Charting these movements gave you some idea of predicting the future, perhaps even the future’s affect on people. Astrology was born.

Astronomy versus Astrology

Then along came Copernicus. Nicholas Copernicus was a German-Polish polymath: an astronomer, mathematician, artist, jurist, cleric, physician, scholar, and military leader–just to name a few of his accomplishments. Through 30 years of observation, he realized the seemingly strange motions of the other planets and the Sun weren’t due to their being moved about by celestial beings, but because the Earth was moving.

In fact, the Earth was moving in several ways, spinning on its axis and moving in a pattern around the Sun, not vice versa. It was at this point that classical astrology began to be overtaken by modern astronomy.

Astronomy’s ascension took centuries and efforts of men like Tycho Brahe, Galileo, Sir Isaac Newton, and Albert Einstein to explain the motion of the planets, stars, and even light itself. What we’re left with makes a mess of astrology. I suppose gravity could be gravity and all movement relative and the planets could still decide our fates, but I’m guessing your decisions and actions have a lot more to do with it than whether Jupiter has entered Pisces. I suppose everything in the universe exerts a gravitational pull (no matter how small) on everything else, but I doubt that gravitational pull is affecting your destiny too much.

Love Horoscopes in the Modern Age

The legacy of really brilliant and observant ancient people’s all over the world observing the movement of the stars has left us with a number of colorful and vibrant astrological traditions. Everything is in place to let you receive a horoscope from a number of different cultural perspectives, and these are fun to read (I read them myself occasionally). But don’t make your decisions in relationships and romances based on them, and certainly don’t pay money to people for this information (or misinformation).

And when you talk to your love psychic, understand they have ways (cold reading) to get information out of you that makes it seem like they have psychic powers.

In the end, horoscopes and psychic readings are so general and apply to so many people that you can almost always find a reference to yourself. The fact is, you are so much different than anyone else reading the love horoscope that you won’t find something that applies to you. Maybe that’s the ultimate truth about love horoscopes: they make us feel special, as if the universe somehow arranges itself to help our romantic prospects.

People with relationship problems often have trouble getting perspective.

When the two of you share attraction, but things aren’t going right, crazy thoughts can enter your head and desperate emotions can grip you.

Sometimes, you’ll jump through any hoop to stay in the relationship when you really shouldn’t. Other times, you’ll deceive yourself in the hope things aren’t as bad as they seem, eventually making the pain and recriminations worse. In other relationships, indecision and procrastination cause a relationship to slowly and painfully wither on the vine.

When facing relationship problems, your better off facing the truth and coming to terms with relationship issues, instead of turning a blind eye and hoping things get better. Often as bad is when people over-react to a bad relationship and take foolish steps to confirm their suspicions. It’s better to keep your perspective, maintain control of your emotions, and make the smart decisions which help your relationship better or help you move on from a bad relationship.

Cheating Partners – Relationship Tips

While some couples do fine with “open relationships”, most dating couples and married people need a commitment to monogamy to keep the relationship bond strong. Jealousy, resentment, self-esteem, and psychology all play into a relationship where infidelity is going on. With social networking websites becoming mainstream and Americans making contact with ex-girlfriends and ex-boyfriends and old crushes, cheating is easier to do and more prevalent than ever before. If infidelity or suspicion of infidelity is ruining your relationship, here are things to help you confirm or disprove your suspicions.

If your relationship partner doesn’t seem to want you to know who they talk to on the phone, this can be a sign of trouble. Learn how to do reverse phone lookups, so you know who it is that keeps calling your spouse or relationship partner.

The same can be said about online activity. If he or she isn’t comfortable with your knowing what they say or who they accept on Facebook, Twitter, or Google Plus, they may have something to hide. This is harder to learn about, but the very fact they don’t want you to know is a bad sign. Don’t expect them to want you to rifle through your messages–you wouldn’t want that either–but if they get visibly nervous when you walk up to them while online, they probably have something to hide.

You can try a number of methods to see whether they are cheaters or not. I’ve heard of men claiming they’re going to be out of town when they aren’t, then testing to see if a second guy friend shows up when you’re supposed to be gone. I’ve heard of people putting a friend up to fake-seducing their loved one, to see if they’re capable of cheating.

I don’t particularly like either idea, because the first introducing lying into the relationship, no matter what, while the second sounds like the romance equivalent of entrapment–or something you’d read about in a Shakespeare comedy. If doubts are really bothing you, try hiring a private investigator to see what they learn. These are trained professionals with experience in learning the truth, and with a relatively small amount of money they have a high likelihood of turning up the truth without the lies and trickery.

In or Out? – Romance Advice

One problem that plagues many relationships is that one or both love partners aren’t completely committed to the relationship. That isn’t to say they aren’t attracted to their partner or they don’t feel romantically about the other one. It’s just they haven’t decided whether this is the right relationship or they want to move on to something else. This was a major problem of mine before I settled down and my lack of commitment killed many relationships.

If this describes you, understand that you aren’t being fair to the other person. It’s natural to wonder what else is out there. It’s even natural to have periods of doubt or times when you are more distant than others. But your romantic mate deserves better than to be kept on the proverbial string, because you probably don’t want to be in the relationship, but you keep them around in case nothing better comes along. When you aren’t fully in or fully out, you don’t commit to the relationship you should. Eventually, you fall between two chairs. As I said before, this is about a perpetual situation where you have your eye on the door. Don’t treat your partner that way, because they deserve to either have you or have you out of their life.

Wanting to Reunite – Love Suggestions

This is like the Seinfeld episode, where they explored that idea that a lot of couples have to break up several times before they finally split. Kramer decides to break up with a woman and really lambasts her in the breakup scene. When he tells Jerry and Elaine, they unloose with all manner of insults about this woman. The next day, Kramer recants and begs the woman to take him back–then gets angry at his friends for what they said. They tell each other they should have known: long-term couples always take several breakups to make it final.

If that describes the two of you and you’re wanting to reunite, you have to ask yourself why you broke up in the first place. The drama, raw emotion, and titillation of getting back together seems great, but if you didn’t resolve your issues, then it’s doomed to end in failure again. In fact, some couples seem to relish the breakups and make-ups.

When in a relationship like this, you’ll have a moment of ultimate truth, where you have to ask yourself what it is that keeps splitting your apart. Get to the core of your relationship problems and see if you can do something to make things better. If not, stay out of the relationship this time around. Eventually, you’re going to have the split-up which is so brutal and so heart-rending that you won’t want to reunite, but you can spare both of you the pain and emotional scars if you figure out it won’t work up-front.

Relationship Issues and Counseling

If you have relationship problems and the two of you can’t seem to make things better, but the two of you really do love, cherish, and respect one another, get relationship counseling. Guys don’t like the sound of bringing a third party in to repair a bad romance, but a counselor is a trained professional who teaches you techniques to help you make the relationship better yourself.

Life Questionnaire for Men

A girlfriend wanting to ask serious questions to a guy is usually going to get open and straightforward answers, at least once the guy starts talking.

Most men aren’t going to want to talk about all the romantic girly stuff off the bat, but that doesn’t mean they have anything to hide.

While men like to joke around and discuss hypotheticals, seriously discussing their emotions, feelings, and “future” doesn’t come natural to many of them.

If you’re getting resistance, mix a few of these questions into the “romantic questions to ask a guy” list. Transition from one to the other and they’ll never know the difference. If a man gets the idea you’re beating around the bush about life questions and marriage commitments, they may shut you down, so avoid questions that might scare a guy in these circumstances, if your man typically doesn’t like talking about committed relationships.

Relationship Quiz for Men

I’ve started the list off with a few basic, non-intrusive questions, then move on in a few short queries to some extremely personal and in-depth ones. If you think asking the most serious questions that soon is too much, add in a few of the more general questions further down the list.

Are you a member of any clubs or organizations?

Do you enjoy people’s company or do you consider yourself a private person?

Do you have any pets? What are their names?

Do you enjoy traveling? What’s your favorite vacation been so far? What made it so special?

Do you like children?

Do you have your own desktop computer or a laptop?

Do you read books? Has a book influenced you or had an impact on your life?

Who is the head of your family?

Do you smoke? Have you ever smoked?

Have you ever undergone counseling or therapy of any sort?

Have you ever been in trouble with the law?

Have you ever done volunteer work?

Have you ever had a brush with death?

Is weight a factor in choosing a romantic partner?

If a relative died and left you a million dollars, what would you do with the money?

If you could change one event in history, what would it be?

What’s the relationship with your mother like?

What’s the relationship with your brother or brothers like?

What’s the relationship with your sister or sisters like?

When was the last time you cried? Why?

When was the last time you really felt proud of something you’d done? What was it?

What was the last thing you laughed at (before this conversation)? Why did you find it funny?

What’s your favorite sport? Why?

What is the first memory you have?

Which celebrity do you admire? Why?

What’s the worst thing you’ve done to a friend? Why?

When you settle done, do you want to settle down in the big city, in the suburbs, in a small town, or in the country?

Remember that asking about “settling down” might make a guy think you’re trying to turn the conversation to marriage, kids, and life together. If that’s no stress, then ask right away. If there is some resistance or you think this turns the conversation too serious for the relationship you’ve had to far, avoid asking these questions. In the end, you’re the best judge of which questions are too personal.

Life Questionnaire for Women

When compiling a list of serious questions to ask a girl, you have to be careful not to cross the line.

You want to learn about girls who interest or infatuate you, but you never know what kind of a home life someone else has.

So try to set move the line of questioning from the less personal, yet still revealing, questions to the more personal types of Q&A responses as you get to know your love interest or girlfriend a little better.

Remember not to ask questions that you don’t want an answer to. If hearing stories about the other men a female you’re dating has seen is going to bother you, don’t ask. Also, understand that when you ask serious questions, some women who don’t want to talk about it are going to feel comfortable telling you it’s none of your business, while others may take refuge in what they consider a white lie.

While you hope that isn’t the case, the more personal a serious question is, the more likely you aren’t going to hear the full truth.

Relationship Quiz for Women

In the romantic questionnaire, many of the questions had a playful or even comic quality to them. Most of these questions are meant to seriously engage a girl in a conversation about herself, probing her mentality and emotional makeup. You might slip a few of these questions into conversation when the conversation gets serious, instead of having giant pop test for her the next time the two of you are together. Some of these are intense questions, so a little goes a long way. Good luck getting your answers.

Do you have a cause you believe in strongly?

Do you believe in ghosts?

Do you have any phobias?

Do you enjoy dancing? Are you good at dancing?

Are you good at keeping a secret?

Are you well-organized? Neat?

Do you consider yourself lazy or energetic?

Are you a drinker?

Do you believe in monogamy?

How much time do you spend on the phone with friends in a day?

How much time do you spend texting friends in a day?

Do you enjoy cooking?

Do you like parties? Are you a partier? Do you throw parties?

Have you ever been on a blind date? Tell me about it.

Who is your favorite author? Why?

Have you ever undergone counseling or therapy of any sort?

Are you a virgin? How old were you when you lost your virginity?

How do you prefer to spend New Year’s Eve?

On a scale of 1 to 10, how ambitious are you?

On a scale of 1 to 10, how important is money to you?

On a scale of 1 to 10, how important is your family to you?

How do you tend to celebrate your birthdays? How did you celebrate your sweet 16 birthday?

How do you feel about divorce?

How is your relationship now with your brothers and sisters?

How many credit cards do you own?

How many sexual partners have you had so far?

How often do you interact with your parents?

How old were you when you started dating?

Are you patient or not?

What’s the most impulsive thing you’ve ever done?

What’s your favorite tv show? Why?

What’s your favorite movie, ever? Why?

Is height a factor in choosing a romantic partner?

What was your first memory?

Which famous person do you admire? Why?

What’s the worst single thing you’ve done to a friend and why?

Which physical trait do you tend to notice first in a person of the opposite sex?

When you settle, would you prefer to live in the heart of the city, in the suburbs, in a smaller town, or in the countryside?

Are you friends with any of your ex-boyfriends?

Have you ever cheated on a boyfriend?

What’s been your longest romantic relationship? Why did it end?

What’s your relationship with your father like?

What’s your relationship with your mother like?

What’s your relationship with your brother or brothers like?

What’s your relationship with your sister or sisters like?

Usually, asking a girl about her friends and family are no big deal. They’ll happily tell you about their bevy of friends and all the great memories they’ve had with their family and the support they continue to receive.

Probings Questions Can Go Too Far

If a female seems hesistant to talk about her family, she might have home issues she doesn’t want to talk about. Divorce, fighting, and abuse are all possibilities, though some families are simply private and considering prying questions to be rude. So if she doesn’t seem interested in opening up, just let it drop and hope she’ll confide in you when she’s more comfortable with you. Don’t assume the worst, unless she gives you reason.

When talking about guys she’s dated and ex-boyfriends, there may be similar hesistancy. If this was a long time ago, she probably doesn’t have feelings anymore. She once did, though, so you might be treading on territory she doesn’t want to revisit. In other cases, especially when a relationship has ended recently, she might still have unresolved feelings she’s uncomfortable expressing. If that’s the case, it’s not certain she wants to get back with this other guy. Emotions are complicated sometime. Closure might be needed before she can fully move on, so just give her space and save the questions for later.

Remember, what a person doesn’t say is sometimes as important as what they say. Whether you get full disclosure or a few evasions along the way, you’re learning about the serious side of your girlfriend.

After reading all that mess, I’m sure you feel a whole lot smarter. I’m not sure why they call questions you ponder “imponderables“, but I hope you ponder them just the same.

The following romantic questions to ask a guy are meant for a dinner date or your after-date conversations.

Most of the questions below aren’t going to scare too many real men off, and if you introduce them in a playful way, you should get pretty honest answers.

Guys love hypothetical questions. A bunch of boys (or men) sitting around are likely to ask each other hypothetical questions, so your man is probably more in a habit of talking about this stuff than you’d think–but it’s always in a jesting or non-stressful setting. Use that to your advantage and ask your probing questions with a sense of fun.

What is your idea of a romantic date?

Who is the sexiest woman alive?

What do you consider is the sexiest thing a woman could do for you?

What was your first crush and what drew you to her?

Which feature of mine drew me to you? Which is your favorite now?

Who is your favorite aunt or uncle? Why?

How big of a success was your first date?

If you saw me out with another guy, would you think: he’s an old friend, he’s a family member, or I’m cheating?

The list above is designed to get those answers right away.

Questions to Ask in a Romance

When you ask romantic questions to the girl in your life, you want to get them talking about happy memories and thinking about positive emotions.

The bad times are going to come and go and there will be plenty of time to worry about those things tomorrow.

What you want is to bring some laughter, playfulness, and sense of fun into your romance. And if you get a few revealing answers from your girlfriend, that’s all the better.

Just like guys, females tend to enjoy talking about themselves. When we discuss our personal likes, dislikes, and experiences, we often reveal more of ourselves than we intend. So if you have a girlfriend who hasn’t opened up to you, the following relationship quiz is a fun way to get her talking about herself, without everything seeming serious.

What are your favorite childhood memories?

Does your have any quirky traditions? What are they?

If you could relive any one event of your childhood, which would it be?

Which hobbies did you have in childhood?

Do you have a natural talent I wouldn’t know about?

Are you outgoing or shy?

If you had an all-expense paid trip to anywhere in the world, where would it be?

If you could have the perfect date, what would it be?

Does everyone have one soul mate or do many exist for each person?

What is your idea of romance?

Do you believe in public displays of affection?

Who are more romantic: men or women? Why?

Who are more sentimental: men or women? Why?

What’s the most romantic thing you have ever done?

What’s the best relationship advice you’ve ever gotten? Who gave it to you?

Is there such a thing as being too much in love?

What three words best describe you?

What three words would your friends use to describe you?

What do you wish to be remembered for?

Is there a type of clothing you find particularly sexy?

What type of cologne do you prefer on a man?

What is your secret romantic fantasy? Sexual fantasy?

What do you consider is the sexiest thing a man can do for a woman?

What do you consider the worst thing a man can do to a woman?

Who’s the sexiest man alive?

What was your first date like?

How long did your first relationship last?

What are you most likely to do for the man you love: write him a letter, buy him a present, or give him a sexy surprise?

If you had one day left to live on the Earth, what would you do?

If your ex-boyfriends were asked to describe you with three adjectives, what would those adjectives be?

What is your favorite euphemism for sex?

What is the naughtiest piece of clothing you’ve ever worn?

What’s the sexiest dream you’ve ever had?

What was the best date you’ve ever had? Where did you go?

If you saw me out somewhere with another woman, would you think she was a relative, an old friend, or a girl I’m seeing on the side?

What is your idea of the perfect romantic gift?

What is your idea of the least romantic gift a guy can give a woman?

Which trait of mine first drew you to me? What is your favorite trait of mine now?

Remember there are some answers you don’t want to know about. A lot of guys are better off not knowing about their girlfriends’ previous relationships or whatever sexual encounters they’ve had, so if you know you’re one of those types of guys, avoid the sexy questions when trying to get romantic with your girlfriend. Too many times, revealing Q&A conversations turn into problems later in the romance.

There are other parts of the quiz I would suggest you avoid. These don’t fit into the romantic interlude, so much as the serious or practical categories. Let me explain.

Personal Questions To Avoid

I’m not saying you never ask these questions, but I’m saying you avoid these when you first get to know a woman and when they two of you first start dating. If you date long enough for it to become a serious relationship, you can learn this information later.

What are your religious beliefs? What are your political beliefs?

Politics and religion are two things people shouldn’t discuss early on. The temptation is to try to convince the other of your stance, and seldom is someone going to be convinced to change their core beliefs so quickly. Much of the time, someone ends up uncomfortable, resentful, or angry. If the person feels strongly about Obama or their faith, they’ll probably volunteer that information. If they don’t want to talk about it, they might feel it’s an intrusion being asked point blank about it.

What are your least favorite childhood memories?

Another question to avoid at first is asking about negative childhood experiences. It’s usually a bad idea to dwell on negativity in an early dating relationship anyway, but probing about a person’s most emotional moments as a child are particularly off-putting to many. Remember: keep it light.

You can use your business card to get more dates. Let’s face it. Meeting the opposite sex and trying to get a date is a type of marketing, and no one who’s serious about their business fails to have a business card. So put some thought into your business card.

One strategy for getting dates using your business cards involves creating business cards specifically for the purpose of using when you meet women. Instead of listing your job title, you might use something like “Available Single Man” as your title on the card. You could also include a photo and a cute quote.

On the other hand, if you work in an office, you probably already have a business card. Never just give this business card “as-is” to a prospective date. ALWAYS write something on the back of it to personalize it. You’ll get a lot more calls if you do something clever with personality when handing your card over than if you just become another in a rolodex full of cards.

If you own your own business, then you have the opportunity to create any kind of business card for that business that you like. Take advantage of this and create a business card that will make you attractive to women. For example, be sure to include your photo on the business card. Women find solid red ties powerful and attractive, so if you can get a photo on your card wearing such a tie, you’ll be ahead of the game already.
